3. How to write the copy on your website for maximum sales!

Some proven formulas for writing the body of your website copy.

Here come the all-important NUTS & BOLTS of your website. It's
here that you make your case, tell your audience, sell your
stuff!
Now if you're like most people, writing isn't exactly one of
your favorite things. In fact, you may hate having to write.
Putting the pen to paper or sitting down to the computer
keyboard to write a letter is like going to the dentist for a
root canal (yuk!).
Fortunately, writing good website copy that SELLS isn't high
art. You don't have to be a genius, a great writer, or even
half-way good with words. There are a dozen or so tried-and-true
sales copy formulas that will put readers in the palm of your
hand.
How do we know these formulas work? They've been perfected over
generations by the direct mail industry. In that business, a top
writer composes a letter, it's mailed out to a million select
addresses, and they measure how many responses and sales they
get. After a while, the direct mail folks noticed that certain
kinds of sales copy formulas worked almost every time.
I'll never forget a 27-year old manager telling me, "Get rich
and famous by using other people's good ideas." That man is now
the President of CBS Radio (one of the most powerful and best
paid positions in all of broadcasting). We'll follow his sage
advice when writing sales copy. Our copy will copy the smart
strategies of those who have become rich before us.
Proven sales copy formulas YOU can use to make your copy SELL!
1. Tell a story. Notice how many of the email sales letters you
get follow this format. One I get over and over from different
people goes "Six months ago my company was downsized and I found
myself out of a job. I expected the worst. Then I heard about
the XXX Company. Now I'm an independent agent making three times
what I did on my old job. And I'll never be downsized again!"
It's hard to resist reading a story, especially if it sounds
like someone who has a situation similar to our own. People love
success stories when they tell us how to get success ourselves.
2. A message from the president. People respect a note from the
head of the company. It lends authority to the message and makes
the reader feel important. That's a good way to make a sale.
This formula can also be used to let the reader in on some
inside information, another sales copy favorite. Insider
information is also one of the more effective things you can put
on your website. People on the Net like to feel that they're
getting special information they can't get anywhere else.
3. Offer something free. Maybe it's a free or discounted visit
to your store or office. A doctor who lives down the street from
me built his patient list by sending out several hundred
postcards offering "10% off your first visit." The prospect who
is interested in your product or service will appreciate more
information. Offer it in the form of a free Special Report,
brochure, or booklet. (By the way, write me at DrNunley@aol.com

4. Ask a question. "Are your days hectic and frustrating?" This
is good old-fashioned psychology. When you ask a question, the
reader is enticed to answer it. It mentally involves the reader
in your sales copy and offer. Some experts say to ask a series
of questions, each likely being answered with "yes." The final
question has the reader saying "yes" to a sale.
5. Point out a problem that the prospect has. This is the
adverting classic. Watch for it in marketing and commercials
everywhere. Direct the reader's attention to a problem, then
make the problem seem worse. Once you've established the problem
as a major impediment in the reader's life, introduce your
service or product as the solution.
WRITE A HEADLINE TO GRAB ATTENTION!
People won't read the details until you get their attention with
a headline. Because of the way HTML code works, headlines are a
big part of website design. Use them on your site whenever
possible. Most sales letters begin with a headline that quickly
presents the major points. It can be typed in big bold letters
like a newspaper headline:
THE NEW WIDGET 2000 WILL SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE--AND IT'S 40% OFF
THIS MONTH ONLY!
You can also write the headline in paragraph fashion just above
the salutation:
The new widget 2000 will simplify your life!
And it's 40% off this month only!
Finally, stress benefits rather than features. How do the
features of your service or product improve the customer's life,
work, or pocketbook. The benefits of your offer may be obvious
to you, but don't leave it up to the reader to figure them out,
no matter how obvious they may seem. Stress benefits. Link them
to the features your offer.
Websites are a very close cousin to personal letters. And just
like a good sales letter, your well-written website copy can be
a wonderfully personal way to introduce people to your product,
service, organization, or idea. By using some of the ideas and
formulas I've mentioned above, you can produce sizzling sales
copy that produces results.

One of the things I think webmasters don't do is use their
signature. Or they don't do it right.
A signature is a couple lines of text at the end of an e-mail,
newsgroup post, message board post, etc. You can stick anything
in it- text, hyperlinks, pictures, and so on.
Of course the best thing to stick in your signature is the
obvious: your site's URL. If someone's reading your newsgroup
posting, for example, they might scroll down and see this:

(As you read, that was an EXAMPLE. Don't e-mail me about any cars.)
So this person gets excited about your site. He clicks on it.
You get a hit. Who knows, he might tell his friends, who might
tell their friends, and so on. And there might even be other
people reading your post. As you can see, signature files could
be very profitable.
But that's only if done right. (Of course there's a but!)
Rule number one: Don't be boring!

Rule number two: Don't go overboard
I've seen people with signatures 20 lines long or longer, trying
to get me to click on links which they probably get money off
of. They'd have a better chance of me clicking on one link than
six links.
Rule number three: Don't forget
When you have a signature, don't forget to put it in. Get an
e-mail program like Outlook that lets you put a signature in
your e-mail easily.
Rule number four: Get posting!
Your signature isn't doing anything if you never use it. Send
e-mail, post messages, and remember to use your signature.
